Creation of the Logo

In the spring of 2021, several of us SLFAHP members started sketching ideas for our logo. By August 2021, a few of us formed the “official” logo design team as a subcommittee of the SLFAHP web content and design team. We created dozens of designs over the next months, including designs sent in by many SLFAHP members. After much back and forth, we narrowed it down to a dozen or so preferred designs. With input from within the entire SLFAHP, the web content and design team gave us valuable input and a new direction: back to the drawing board.

Mel Reeder, graphic designer and Gail Reeder’s sister, generously stepped in at Gail’s request. Mel gave her time and talents to guide us, taking our sketches and ideas to heart. We wanted to represent the SLFAHP in a single graphic, one that could express who we are as well as our mission. It was a tall order.

Logo for Southern Lesbian Feminist Activist Herstory Project is a clenched fist holding a pen that is attached to a labrys.

Undaunted, Mel gave her time and talents, taking our multiple sketches and sweeping ideas to further refine our final designs, which were presented to the entire team for discussions. Mel tweaked designs for a few more months. Mel listened and understood us. It approached a miracle as she often made changes for us in real time with the team discussions during Zoom calls. By the end of November 2021, Mel had helped our logo take its iconic shape and colors, with applause from all of us.

SLFAHP would like to thank the logo design team for their time, creativity, and perseverance in creating our logo. Our logo aptly represents our mission and collective intentions.

SLFHAP extends a special thanks to Mel Reeder for her help and patience in finessing the final logo design and the website banner design.
