Phyllis Free

PHYLLIS FREE is a freelance, multidisciplinary artist. In addition to her work in music as a nationally-recognized drummer and recording artist, her extensive list of professional credits includes creative work in: theatre; visual & media arts; literary arts and poetry; and dance and choreography. Her background as an interdisciplinary arts consultant, workshop facilitator, professional development trainer, and artist-in-residence includes a bachelor of fine arts degree in speech and drama education; graduate studies in vocational career development and special education; and a master’s degree in liberal studies with a concentration in interdisciplinary fine arts and sociology.

Throughout her career, Phyllis Free focused her work toward exploring the therapeutic and educational benefits of creative self-expression; as well as toward the power of the arts to build community, while addressing issues of social and humanitarian concern.

Phyllis Free is currently a member of Alternate ROOTS. She has been actively engaged in the work of the SLFA Herstory Project since its inception. Born in 1949, in Folkston, Georgia, near the Okefenokee Swamp, she now lives in Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island in northeast Florida.
