Barbara Lieu, born Barbara Herring in 1945 and raised in upstate New York, was a major developer of the Pagoda, a lesbian residential community and cultural center in St. Augustine, Florida (active 1977-99). She writes: “I have lived in lesbian community since 1978.  I am one of the three developers of Alapine Village, a 100-acre, lesbian community on Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama, which has expanded from 18 to 30 residents.  Growing communities require much attention and lots of work. So far, I am still doing that work at the age of 77.”
