B. Leaf Cronewrite

B. Leaf Cronewrite is Maryann Hopper’s crone name. She knows that name claiming and all kinds of lesbian stories are valuable. She came out in 1977 in Memphis, Tennessee, surrounded by a supportive band of radical lesbians. She spent a fair amount of years employed as a college English teacher and as a technical writer of airline travel software.

B. Leaf Cronewrite and her partner, Drea Firewalker, founded Womontown, an intentional womyn’s urban community in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1989. Watch a documentary made in 2022 about Womontown:

For 20 years, B. Leaf Cronewrite attended Womonwrites: the Southeast Lesbian Writers Conference. She has worked on five of the Sinister Wisdom issues produced by the Southern Lesbian Feminist Activist Herstory Project that grew out of Womonwrites. Now in Atlanta, Georgia, she hangs out with outspoken Dykewriters members and with other creative souls who inspire her activism and her constant creation of stories set in the South.

B. Leaf Cronewrite’s collection of short stories, Don’t Let the Flies In, and her novel, A Lineage of Deception, published under the name Maryann Hopper, are available on Amazon.com. She is working on a novella, “Tiffany.” She and Drea created a Crone Council that has met monthly for 11 years, and they created a crone, djembe drum circle. They still find women’s gatherings to join and worldwide destinations to explore.
