Woody Blue

Woody Blue: I was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1952. In 1983, I joined the Seneca Women’s Peace Camp, where I got lesbianized and radicalized. In 1985, I toured the South, and I felt embraced by the Southern lesbians who introduced me to their communities.

I volunteered my efforts during the National March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights in 1987; the March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay, and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation in 1993; the Gay Games in NYC in 1994; and many other political events. I worked at the Southern Festival for Music and Comedy and at Rhythmfest for several years.

In 1986, I attended my first Womonwrites: the Southeast Lesbian Writers Conference, where I started building strong, Southern ties and sharpening my writing skills. I couldn’t resist the hospitality down South, and I moved to Gainesville, Florida, in 1992. I attended massage school and started a new career.

Currently, I continue to do massage, and I feel honored to help tell the stories of the lesbian activists who built the Lesbian Nation in the South.
