Myriam Fougere

Myriam Fougere

Myriam Fougère was born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, in 1955. Prior to becoming a filmmaker, she was making clay sculptures inspired by the shape of a vulva. She showed her work in women-only spaces for two decades. She organized the “East Coast Lesbians’ Festival” with Lin Daniels (1988-1990). She discovered the Pagoda in St. Augustine, Florida, in 1984, becoming a member right away, returning as often as possible.

Myriam Fougère writes, shoots, directs, and edits her films. Her first film was a poetic, innovative documentary about breast cancer: On A Moving Path, came out in 2007. Lesbiana – A Parallel Revolution (2012), is a historical and personal documentary about the rise and fall of the lesbian movement in Quebec and United States in the 1980s.

For her last film, Feminista (2017), she turned her creative lens to the newest generation of feminist and lesbian activists in Europe.

Since 2021, Myriam has returned to her first love of making vulva sculptures in clay, burnished and pit-fired. She sees her sculptures as symbols, and also, as witnesses of lesbian culture in the making.
